10 Things Every New Homeowner Should Buy
So you bought a place. Maybe you’re a first time homeowner. Over the years, I’ve learned from experience that there are some super helpful things that every new homeowner needs to have on hand or needs to buy ASAP.
Here’s 10 things every new homeowner should have on their “must buy” list:
1) New locks: I don’t care if this is a new place. I don’t care if you bought the place from your Grandma. Do you know who else had keys before you? For sure? Change the locks immediately.
2) A fire extinguisher: You will have a fire in your kitchen at one point or another. I don’t care who you are or how great of a cook you think you are. Have one handy.
3) Fire Alarms/CO2 detectors: Speaking of fire, have working fire alarm/CO2 detectors handy. Check your local code for where they should be located. And when the time changes for Daylight Savings Time, check your batteries. Because you know they only start beeping in the middle of the night.
4) Basic Tools: Do you have a basic toolbox? With a hammer, screwdrivers, tape measure, etc.? Better yet, get a laser tape measure and invest in a few nice power tools. Homeownership means work on your home. And you’ll have to hang up some things on the walls, too.
5) Ring Doorbell/Home Alarm System: Consider getting one. They are not expensive and will give you piece of mind in your new home.
6) Toilet brushes/plungers: Have you ever used a bathroom and needed a plunger? Your new home doesn’t come with one. You’ll want one for each bathroom.
7) Extension cords: You’ll need a few for a new place, no doubt. Make sure you have some on hand.
8) Batteries: You’ll need batteries! Get a bunch, all different kinds.
9) Smart Thermostat: Unless your home already has one, invest in a smart thermostat. It will help you save money on your energy bills, and you can operate it from your smartphone.
10) Cleaning Supplies: You may have had some on hand, but you’ll need more for a new place. And maybe you have things you didn’t have before. Like hardwood floors, or carpet, or stone or granite countertops.
And you know what? Christmas is coming, so if you’re thinking of buying a new place, or you just did, put them on your Christmas list!
